Wondering if you can bring your ham or GMRS radios through TSA in a carry-on bag? take a look 👀
Gary is K4AAQ on ham radio and WRPG652 on GMRS. He travels frequently with a carry-on bag full of ham radios and video equipment, cords, connectors, chargers, and miscellaneous electronics. He has never been told he couldn’t bring something on board. On very rare occasions, TSA has asked to inspect the bag. This includes international travel to the Caribbean and Europe.

HRN 471: Appliance Boy Meets M17
M17 is the experimental, VHF/UHF version of the free, open source digital voice project based on CODEC2, the open source vocoder developed by David Rowe VK5DGR. Previously, CODEC2 has been used in a program called FreeDV, typically used on HF, but usable on VHF/UHF, as it’s designed to be operated with a SSB transmitter. In this episode, we’ll meet some of the guys involved in the M17 project, see what it is, where it stands, and what the future may bring.

HamRadioNow’s East Coast Host, Gary K4AAQ, gave a presentation on Digital Voice for VHF/UHF at the 2023 Charlotte Hamfest. And he decided to spend some more time making a version for this Special Edition HRN show. That program timed out to about 90 minutes, so Gary next took the editing hatchet to the program and cut it down to 15 minutes.
If it feels like something’s missing… well, yeah, about 75 minutes worth of content is missing. Some of that is ‘fat’, sort of, but some of it was meat. Want the meat? You’re 75 minutes away😏

HamRadioNow’s East Coast Host, Gary K4AAQ, gave a presentation on Digital Voice for VHF/UHF at the 2023 Charlotte Hamfest. And pretty much just because he spent so many hours preparing a one-hour talk, he decided to spend even more hours making this version.
If 90 minutes is too much time, he also edited a 15-minute version, so look for the SHORT version someplace nearby!
