Aircraft Navigation – Why Most Planes Don’t Get Lost

It is rare that a modern aircraft can get lost, although there are plenty of reports of small light aircraft and private planes having a panic.

To the rescue comes the VOR (Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range) which is key navigation system used by aircraft worldwide, although somewhat supersceded these days by GPS.

VOR transmits radio signals that help pilots determine their exact direction relative to the station, ensuring safe and accurate flight paths.

These ground-based beacons have been guiding planes for decades, forming an invisible network across the skies.

With VOR technology, even in poor visibility, pilots can stay on course with pinpoint accuracy—a testament to aviation’s commitment to safety and innovation.
