I’ve been running Meshtastic for about a year now, and in this video I’m putting three Seeed Studio devices through real-world testing: the credit-card-sized SenseCAP, the Wio Tracker, and the SenseCAP Solar Node — which is replacing a homebrew solar Meshtastic node I built and installed on my flagpole a year ago.
What’s covered in this video:
– What LoRa and Meshtastic actually are, and why there’s zero licensing required to get started
– Full hands-on review of the SenseCAP card tracker — strengths, weaknesses, and real specs (nRF52840 MCU, LR1110 LoRa, 700mAh battery)
– Full hands-on review of the Wio Tracker — better battery life, external antenna, and where the interface falls short (nRF52840 MCU, SX1262 LoRa, L76K GPS)
– Why mesh networks are becoming a serious tool for hams, non-hams, and preparedness-minded folks alike — including a look at end-to-end encryption you can’t legally run on ham bands
– Full unboxing, firmware update, and configuration of the SenseCAP Solar Node P1-Pro (XIAO nRF52840 Plus, Wio-SX1262, 13,400mAh battery, 5W solar panel)
– Removing my one-year-old homebrew solar node and installing the Solar Node on my flagpole, plus a real range test from my iPhone and other nodes around the property
– An honest cost breakdown: what I spent building my own solar node from parts vs. what the SenseCAP Solar Node actually costs
Transparency note: Seeed Studio sent the Solar Node for this review. The SenseCAP and Wio Tracker were purchased by me. Honest opinions on all three either way.
If you’re looking into off-grid communication, emergency preparedness tools, or you’re just curious what all the Meshtastic and MeshCore hype is about, this video walks through real gear, real specs, and a real year of use.
