The Alternative Newark HamFest Review – with Mike and Callum
It is rare that a modern aircraft can get lost, although there are plenty of reports of small light aircraft and private planes having a panic.
To the rescue comes the VOR (Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range) which is key navigation system used by aircraft worldwide, although somewhat supersceded these days by GPS.
VOR transmits radio signals that help pilots determine their exact direction relative to the station, ensuring safe and accurate flight paths.
These ground-based beacons have been guiding planes for decades, forming an invisible network across the skies.
With VOR technology, even in poor visibility, pilots can stay on course with pinpoint accuracy—a testament to aviation’s commitment to safety and innovation.
Some of you guys dropped in and out watching this last weekend and enjoyed it.. There’s a storm approaching, aircraft landing, birds tweeting, squirrels raiding – and then rain from Sunday.
I am co-locating the guys for the 40-ft / 12m mast with the 4-Square on 40m. Some careful measuring and lots of muscle was required. QUAD: This is a multiband antenna that ideally needs independant feeders for each band and a rotator. I have a mast-head remote switcher for this. Similarly, I need control lines for the 4-Square. More details about the 4-Square antenna in a later video. Have fun. Enjoy your radio. Callum.
How many times do I have to fix this before I realise I need to replace the whole thing?
Spoiler: PL259 failure
Experimental stream watching the field, the sheep – and aircraft lights. Aircaft are landing at Birmingham International. There is a road half a mile away and you can hear occassional cars. Mostly a night stream and if you hang around, you will see the sun coming up at around 06:00 local time. There is audio.
My First CQ call at 100W in a long time! LOL
Checking out propagation. Just having a play.
Testing a repair I just completed..
