Ionospheric Propagation on 50MHz | 6 Meters the “Magic” Band

It’s called “the magic band”. Propagation of 50MHz signals over long distances is supported by serendipitous opportunities that arise in the ionosphere, in both the E and F regions. Those opportunities may be anticipated, but cannot be reliably forecast. You’ve gotta be there when they happen! Then, it’s magic.

Roger VK2ZRH will be covering the characteristics of ionospheric sporadic-E propagation (Es), trans equatorial propagation (TEP), and ionospheric F2 propagation. He has extensive experience in this area having previously worked for the IPS Space Weather Services Research / Engineering branch.

This presentation is also very timely with some of the early 50MHz openings to Japan occurring just this week, right at the start of the summer 50MHz DX season.

Increase the Range of Any Handheld Radio for 6 Cents

Increase the range of any handheld radio, A Baofeng, Yaesu or Icom with a counterpoise, otherwise known as a "tiger tail". A tiger tail is a length of wire added to an antenna to take the 1/4th wave rubber duck to a half wave dipole antenna.

8-Year-Old Uses Ham Radio to Talk to Astronaut on the International Space Station

Isabella in the UK has had a chance of a lifetime conversation with Kjell Lindgren, an astronaut aboard the International Space Station.

She used her Dad, Matt M0LMK’s amateur radio to call fellow ham radio enthusiast and commander of the NASA SpaceX Crew-4 as it passed over the UK.

I caught up with Matt and Isabella to have a chat about this very memorable contact.
