Lifting a Amateur Radio Repeater Tower with a Helicopter

A trip down memory lane when in 2015, I had the privilege of assisting with the amateur radio repeater tower, equipment and antenna lift to Mt Duncan in Tasmania’s North West.

A helicopter was required to lift the already assembled tower to the top of the 654m (2145 foot) high mountain. A GoPro was attached to the side of the tower leg during the lift. Also is some footage of the helicopter approaching the site and installation/climb.

Note too the repeater site is remote requiring solar power and requires a long walk to get to the top.

Collapsing of a 340ft Steel Radio Tower #shorts

Archival video footage of the 340 foot (104 metre) steel lattice tower on top of Mt Wellington, Tasmania, Australia in 1997. The tower was demolished by cutting through 2 of the supporting legs and pushing it over with an hydraulic ram.

A new tower stands almost 131 metres high. It has 18 rock anchors installed in dolerite bedrock-some 15 metres deep. Above ground there is a 67-metre cast-concrete shaft below a 64-metre steel superstructure, which supports 3 broadcasting antennas and an internal lift. The steel superstructure and broadcasting antennae are covered with a fibreglass radome to shield the antennas from the weather.

Ham Radio Shack Tour – with Peter Schrader VK4EA

Today’s we get to know Peter Schrader VK4EA in another Ham Radio Shack Tour! Peter lives in Brisbane, Queensland and is a keen amateur radio operator on the microwave band, active up to 47 GHz.

As well as his impressive portable microwave station, Peter also runs DMR and DStar at home and mobile. He is also an APRS tragic with the SSID of VK4EA-9.

He is a member and past president of the Redcliffe & Districts
Radio Club, treasurer of the Brisbane VHF Group, member of
the SEQATV Group and vice-president of Austravel Safetynet
(V M D 750). Peter also volunteers as a AMC and VE Assessor and holds the US callsign, KQ4PS.

Peter is also nominating for the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) Board in 2021.

Discussing the Future of Amateur Radio with the WIA – ACMA Licence Class Consultation

A discussion panel consisting of Scott VK3KJ, Dale VK1DSH, Lee VK3GK and Grant VK5GR representing the Wireless Institute of Australia’s (WIA) Spectrum Strategy team and also the WIA Board will be appearing live on the Ham Radio DX YouTube channel.

The intention is to communicate with WIA members the scope and challenges presented by the recent ACMA’s Consultation paper on Future Amateur Radio Service licensing.
The aim is to provide a forum where the findings of the committee so far can be presented, but also provide an opportunity for questions and answers to be exchanged with members and the wider amateur community.

The WIA will discuss the three options and why it is recommending the option it is. We will also explain ways that the risks of ACMA’s proposals could be mitigated to the benefit of both the amateur service and the ACMA. During the 45 minute session, there will be time for questions via the YouTube chat feedback channel. Questions can also be submitted ahead of time via email to spectrum@wia.org.au. Please note that channel will be moderated, and only questions directly related to the submission will be accepted. We also ask that people be respectful and understand that we will not be commenting on the positions of others.

This session is about the WIA’s considered position and making sure people are clear on what we have found and what the next steps are going to be. The WIA will in particular introduce the next steps that it needs members to take in the consultation process.
