Yes that’s right, a 1 watt contact using a Icom IC-705 on the 144 MHz (2 meter) band across to New Zealand (ZL).
Strong tropospheric propagation was responsible for such an event happening. We also worked New Zealand on other higher bands too! Check out the video here:

I keep hearing "the bands are dead". Well in this live stream, let’s see how much I can hear! I have my radio running on the 40 meter (7 MHz) band running FT8.
As you can see, Gridtracker is running with a realtime map including the RX calls, RX DXCC and realtime receiving data. How many stations will I hear?
I will be running this from Monday 28th Dec 12:00 UTC through to around 22:00 UTC which is 11pm to around 9am local (all night).
See if I hear you! How far away from my station are you when I decoded you? Let me know in the live chat and comments!
Antenna is a simple EFHW antenna.

On a recent Ask an Elmer live stream, the discussion turned toward headphones. What headphones do you use? A good pair can help in pulling out that hard to hear station from the noise.
Adam K6ARK and Rob SevenFortyOne recommended these:

Another day, another 6 meter propagation opening. This time I make some FT8 contacts and toward the end switch to SSB. I had a lot more SSB contacts but didn’t record the audio of them ????♂️????♂️

I recently watched a a power output test on the Icom IC-705 done by YouTuber TheSmokinApe and I was intrigued as to his results on 70cm. He measured no more than 6 watts output. I decided to haul my service monitor (HP Agilent 8924C) out of the cupboard and test my 705 to see if I got the same results.

Join us for a portable adventure trying to send our 2.4 GHz (13cm) ham radio signal from Tasmania, Australia (VK7) to New Zealand (ZL).
On December 13th 2020, Hayden VK7HH and Richard VK7ZBX travelled out portable to try and work Nick ZL1IU at the top end of New Zealand. The Hepburn tropospheric data had good to very good predictions of a duct to carry VHF and above signals across the Tasman Sea.
The ultimate goal was to try and work the 2.4 GHz band, a band that had not achieved a contact over such a great distance before. Were we successful?
