How Does The Xiegu X5105 Transceiver Perform With Morse Code?

After seeing my reviews of the Xiegu X6100, a viewer suggested I might try the Xiegu X5105 as well. So, I asked my friend, Jason, from Ham Radio 2.0 if I could barrow his. After receiving it, I have taken it out in the field a few times only using phone. This video includes my first attempts at using the X5105 for CW.
I like a few things about this radio, but did run into some problems. There will be a follow-up video to this one with my final thoughts on the radio.
For this video Brian W7JET and I drive to the Sierra Ancha Wilderness and activate 2 summits (I did not capture video of the third summit).

3D Printed Morse Code Paddle Cover – Summits on the Air

For this Summits on the Air activation, Dan KC7MSU and I drive down to Tucson to activate Mount Lemmon. It’s a short hike around the observatory to the north side. On this activation I bring along the American Morse Ultra Porta Paddle with a cleaver 3D printed cover that protects the adjustment screws from getting bumped. Many ops like myself prefer holding the paddle rather than mounting it. This particular paddle posses a problem with those exposed contact screws but the 3D printed cover made by Brian AC7PB solves the issue. I am appreciative to Brian for sending me two of them to try out.

GHD GM702 Palm-Size Travel Morse Code Paddle

The GHD GM702 is a paddle manufactured in Japan and sold by Vibroplex and DX Engineering. I purchased my paddle at Hamvention as somewhat of an impulse buy. I should have looked a little closer at the paddle before purchasing, as you will found out when you watch this video. For this paddle and all the others in the series, I took it in the field multiple times and put it under rigorous testing. Here are my thoughts about its performance.

Purchase from Vibroplex: http://www.vibroplex.com/contents/en-us/p3483.html
Purchase from DX Engineering ( Free Shipping): https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/gdk-gm702?seid=dxese1

This "paddle feature" is one in a series of videos about PORTABLE CW KEYS called "Portable Morse Code Paddles". I hope you enjoy this feature and come back for more!

How To Get More Out Of Parks on the Air

Bill Brown K4NYM lives in an HOA community, but he didn’t let that stop him from getting enjoying ham radio. He participates in Parks on the Air, and has found that not only can he get on the air, he can experiment, practice, and learn. Bill’s preferred mode is Morse code and he has some great pointers for those of you who are trying to learn CW.

Bill has a YouTube channel where he shows you the "life in a day" of a Parks on the Air activator. He keeps it raw so that viewers can learn the same lessons he has.

Vertical Antenna for Parks on the Air

In this video I use my new vertical antenna setup to activate Lost Dutchman State Park in Arizona for Parks on the Air. I use an MFJ-1979 Telescopic Whip and a tripod my friend Tony K7AJF made for me. I’ve never owned a vertical antenna. This is my first time setting one up. I was a little nervous I would do something wrong but it was super simple and worked like a champ!

Why Do Most Ops Use QRP for Summits on the Air

QRP is a ham radio term that means “low power transition”. Most people agree QRP is not more than 10 watts output power. So why do most people who participate in Summits on the Air use a 10-watt radio when there are so many radios out there that transmit 100 watts or more? In this video I offer up my explanation.

I drove to the top of Mingus Mountain to operate my radio for Summits on The Air using 100 Watts. This was for the North American Summit to Summit event. While on the mountain I encounter a hang glider and a paraglider preparing to hop off the mountain.

Low Power Morse Code Ham Radio Activities

Richard N1RBD’s ham radio journey began when I joined a wilderness Search and Rescue (SAR) team which uses HTs for communications during call-outs. He does a lot of hiking and backpacking in the North Georgia Mountains and on the Appalachian Trail, so he felt his knowledge of the area could be helpful.

He activated a few SOTA summits with VHF, and was amazed at how far he could get from the summit of a 3000ft mountain running 5 watts. He then discovered Parks on the Air (POTA). Living 7 minutes from a POTA park, he tried some VHF activations with no success. Apparently, there is a huge difference between getting 4 QSOs from a summit vs 10 QSOs from a low-lying park when running VHF!

He started his CW journey in January of 2020 using online resources and apps. His first CW QSO was on March 3, 2020 using a CW Morse Nano straight key to chase a POTA operator for a park to park contact. A few months later, he finally worked up the nerve to attempt a CW SOTA activation. On July 4, I garnered 15 CW QSOs, including my Elmer! At this point, I was officially hooked on CW.

First-Time SOTA Activation in Wyoming

I am from a rural area in western Wyoming. While visiting family there this summer (2022) Sandy and I took a half day to hike to the top of a numbered peak and put it on the air with our ham radio. This is an area where I’ve spent a lot of time, especially riding snowmobiles in the winter. The views were spectacular and very familiar. Neither of us were on air long due to our tight schedule, but it was great to get away and enjoy the outdoors for a short time.

Ways To Improve How You Do Parks On The Air

We all approach our Parks on the Air activations a little different – and that is great! We should customize the adventure to fit who we are. But many of us would like to become a little more effective at it.
Our award winning guest today, Brian Duddy N2BTD, is at the top of the SOTA game and will join us to offer his advice on how we might improve how we do POTA.
