On this activation I join my friend Pat K7GUD on a hike to the top of Capital Butte. I bring along the Xiegu X5105 installed with the latest firmware to see if there is any difference with the performance of the internal CW keyer. In a past video I was quite unhappy with the performance, but admitted that I wasn’t operating the radio on the latest firmware. After this activation I revised my opinion about this radio.

This hike to the top of Capital Butte had a lot of builder hopping and climbing. For me, it was a difficult but rewarding trek. This summit is a Summits On the Air peak and I activated it for the 8 points.

After reviewing the Xiegu X6100 recently I thought it would be interesting to try out the X5105 and see how it compares. Jason from Ham Radio 2.0 agreed to lend me his X5105 (check out his YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/c/HamRadio20).

Many of you will know our gest for this episode, Vince VE6LK. He is a co-host on the Ham Radio Workbench podcast. After seeing my reviews of the Xiegu X6100, a viewer suggested I might try the Xiegu X5105 as well. So, I asked my friend, Jason, from Ham Radio 2.0 if I could barrow his. After receiving it, I have taken it out in the field a few times only using phone. This video includes my first attempts at using the X5105 for CW.
I like a few things about this radio, but did run into some problems. There will be a follow-up video to this one with my final thoughts on the radio.
For this video Brian W7JET and I drive to the Sierra Ancha Wilderness and activate 2 summits (I did not capture video of the third summit).
