Chris N1CLC joins me tonight to talk about equipment for ham radio QRP stations. We will dive into some of the more obscure equipment ideas that we have tried, and tell you how they worked in the field. This will be a modified version of the “what’s in your pack” or “SOTA pack loadout” topic, with special emphasis on gear that may not be very common across QRP stations.

Brad KA9JDE and I completed 3 SOTA summits. Here, Brad is working the ham radio on 40 meters SSB. This was from Spruce Mountain, a drive-up summit in the Prescott National Forest.

I have a friend, I’ll call him Tuje (pronounced Tooge). He has decades of experience in commercial VHF/UHF radio communications. He wants to share his knowledge, but he also wants to remain anonymous. I offered to host his videos on my channel. So here is another video in an ongoing series of helpful videos, primarily relating to VHF communications, but certainly not limited to that topic.
Nick Wood M0NTV enjoys building ham radios and other electronics projects from scratch. He has a firm understanding of the science and techniques necessary to build his projects. Nick has a wonderful YouTube channel where he teaches the basics about homebrew radio construction and how their circuits work. He is a member of the GQRP club where he will occasionally submit an article about his homebrew adventures.

Scott Fusilier N4AAJ thru-hiked a large portion of the Appalachian Trail, and section hiked several stretches of the trail to completed the entire 2198 miles. He also hiked the top 188 miles in Maine twice. His first activation, once he started doing SOTA activations on the trail, was Mt. Katahdin, at the northern terminus (start) of the AT on June 1, 2023. Scott learned a lot from this adventure and is excited to share his story along with pointers and advice.

The VK3IL Homebrew or Kit Pressure Paddle is highly durable, very light and compact, and inexpensive. You have to practice with it a little to get used to how it works. There are many variations out there of similar type. From a simple K5DEZ homebrew paddle that uses a coin cell battery and discrete components, to a project where you order all the parts, to a ready to build kit, to the K6ARK paddle that is already constructed, you have a lot of options in pricing and the amount of effort you want to put in to make one of these paddles.
