Sometimes I just want to get away from the city. Driving to the top of a mountain and operating a Morse code ham radio station is something I find fun and relaxing. There are a few rules you have to follow if you are participating in the "Summits on the Air" program.

The SUR Kobo CIR-45D Morse code key is manufactured in Japan by Ryoichi Takano. This is top tier paddle created with high precision and craftsmanship. This unique paddle is just one of several interesting designs created by San Takano. Here are my thoughts about its performance.

When hiking to the top of a mountain for Summits on the Air you occasionally encounter commercial communication towers. These towers can cause interference with your 2 meter hand-held ham radio. Placing a band pass filter between the radio and the antenna will mitigate this issue.

I switched the polarization in my battery connection for my Morserino by clipping the leads and soldering them back on in reverse, black on red, red on black. After releasing a video of this, several people left comments indicating I could have just removed the Molex pins and reversed them. This would have been much simpler.
This is the battery I purchased:

Finding a battery that is a good match for the Morserino can be difficult. Most batteries that work for the Morserino come with a JST connector. It’s recommended that the batteries be a single cell, 3.7 volt LiPo around 500mAh. I found a good battery with a Molex connector to match the Molex connector on the Morserino, but when it arrived, the polarization was opposite of what the Morserino used. Here’s my fix.
This is the battery I purchased. It isn’t thin enough to go underneath the Morserino.

Again I hit the local trail early to get on a summit for sunrise. This time it was Lookout Mountain. The temperatures were way down so I had time to set up HF and get some long distance contacts to the east coast. I noticed an inquisitive roadrunner watching me, poking his head out from behind the brush at different locations.

$35 isn’t bad for this straight key! I was kind of on the fence, and then my friend Mike K8MRD sent me a video of his.

In this video I hike to the top of Dixie benchmark with my wife, Sandy W7NRS. This is a special activation where I reach 4K Summits on the Air points. All ham radio contacts (or QSOs) are included in this activation video including 2 meter FM. I work make contact with Galih YC2VOC in Indonesia, and my friend, Dan KC7MSU, surprises me on the summit.
