No Internet, No Problem: Off-Grid 3D Printing

Today we’re taking the next step in the off-grid 3D printing saga: setting up a dedicated mini PC, installing Linux Mint Debian Edition, getting Orca Slicer installed without connecting the machine to the internet, slicing a simple model, saving the G-code to a USB flash drive, and printing it on the FlashForge Creator 5.

This video is for anyone who wants to understand how to 3D print without relying on Wi-Fi, cloud services, online accounts, or always-connected software. Whether you’re preparing for off-grid living, RV travel, emergency preparedness, homesteading, field repairs, portable workshops, or you just want your printer to work without phoning home, this is the practical beginner version.

We start with a clean offline computer setup using the Geekom Air12 mini PC, then walk through the sneaker-net workflow: download what you need on an internet-connected machine, transfer it by USB drive, install Orca Slicer, load a 3D model, slice it, export the G-code, move that file to the printer, and make the print.

This is not a speedrun and it is not a “just click these three things” gloss-over. The goal is to show the actual workflow a new 3D printer user needs to understand: what slicer software does, why G-code matters, how USB printing works, and how you can keep the entire printing computer offline once it is prepared.

In this video:

• Setting up an off-grid 3D printing computer
• Using LMDE / Linux Mint Debian Edition for an offline PC
• Installing Orca Slicer without connecting the 3D printing PC to the internet
• Moving files by USB flash drive, also known as sneaker net
• Finding a simple 3D model to print
• Slicing a model into G-code
• Exporting G-code to a USB drive
• Printing from USB on the FlashForge Creator 5
• Building a practical no-cloud 3D printing workflow
• Why offline 3D printing still matters

This is part 3 of the off-grid 3D printer series.

Part 1: Why do we need off-grid 3D printers?
Part 2: Unboxing and setting up “The Chosen One” 3D printer
Part 3: Offline PC setup, Orca Slicer, USB transfer, slicing, G-code, and printing

If you are new to 3D printing, slicers, Linux, or offline workflows, this video should give you a complete first-pass understanding of the process. You do not need to be a Linux wizard or a 3D printing expert to follow along. The whole idea is to make 3D printing possible in a workshop, RV, cabin, ham shack, field station, or anywhere the internet is not part of the plan.

The big picture: your 3D printer does not need the cloud to make useful parts. A model file, a slicer, a USB drive, and a little patience can still get the job done. Just like 1980, except the plastic box magically appears at the end.
