Protecting the Planet – OneDual Band Ham Radio at a time!

Another Amazon return radio lands on the bench, and this time it might be one of the cleanest Retevis RT95 / AnyTone AT-778UV-style dual band mobile radios I’ve seen come back yet. But does it actually work, is anything missing, and can it be tested, programmed, and saved from the eWaste pile one more time?

In this episode of the Amazon Return RT95 series, I go through another returned 2 meter / 70 centimeter mobile ham radio and check the basics: what came in the box, whether the radio powers up, whether it transmits and receives, whether the microphone works, and whether it can still be programmed with CHIRP. These little radios are budget-friendly VHF/UHF mobile transceivers that can make a great first mobile ham radio, shack radio, go-box radio, or simple repeater rig if everything checks out.

This one had a little twist, because I’m running low on spare parts for these returns, but the goal is the same as always: test it honestly, make it right, and get it ready for a new home instead of letting perfectly usable gear become eWaste.

In this video:

• Testing another Amazon return Retevis RT95-style dual band mobile radio
• Checking the box contents and accessories
• Verifying 2 meter and 70 centimeter transmit and receive
• Testing the microphone buttons and controls
• Programming the radio with CHIRP
• Confirming the radio is ready for re-homing
• Talking through what makes these budget mobile radios useful for ham radio operators

The Retevis RT95, AnyTone AT-778UV, and similar compact dual band radios are popular because they are small, affordable, and simple enough for new hams while still being useful for mobile, shack, RV, go-box, and repeater work. They are not fancy radios, but when they work, they do the job: VHF/UHF FM, local repeaters, simplex calling frequencies, and basic mobile operation.

If you are looking for a cheap ham radio mobile rig, a beginner-friendly 2m/70cm radio, or you are curious what happens to returned Amazon radios after they come back, this series is for you.
