Ofcom to allow 1,000 Watts in UK

Ofcom has made their decision to update the amateur radio licensing framework to
provide greater operating freedom for people using amateur radio. Headlines: 1000W (Full), 100W (Intermediate) and 25W (Foundation).

Intentional QRM – A Warning

In a case of deliberate jamming / interference, Ofcom prosecuted an individual who was found guilty of unlicensed use of radio equipment, illegal possession of radio apparatus, and causing deliberate interference to wireless telegraphy – all of which are offences under the Wireless Telegraphy Act.

He was sentenced to 26 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months.

Iain O’Brien, head of spectrum compliance at Ofcom’s spectrum group, said: “Amateur radio community users in the Hull area faced significant disruption after their transmissions were deliberately targeted. We are pleased with this result, which should provide some welcome relief to the local radio community, as well as send a very strong signal to those that abuse the airwaves.”

Two Element Vertical Parasitic Array Antenna – Build & Test

This is the full build and test of my vertical ham radio antenna for 40m. According to the modelling, this should deliver around 4-5dB of extra forward gain to USA from England. The reflector is tuned at 6.8MHz and the Driven at 7.05MHz. Ideally, both of these should be higher up the band. I would like to see 6.9Mhz and 7.15MHz but at the time of writing this description, I am yet to do that – however I think it worked well. We will do a live-stream dedicated to this and I will put a link in the description as soon as that is live. See what you think and let me know if you have built a similar system.

4 Phased Verticals for Extra Gain and F/B

This amazing discovery was highlighted and proven to work by a Caribbean station many years ago. They built one for 20m band and pointed it towards North America. I promise to get around to building this and also pointing at NA. If I had the room, a certain winner for 80m – but 40m would also be great fun! It’s a PAIR of parasitic verticals, phased together – so very easy to make. See what you think! Callum.
