We’ve all heard of the famous G5RV antenna. But is it really all it’s cracked up to be? How well do they work if at all? What do you need to avoid when deploying the antenna to ensure it works properly.
We answer "Does the G5RV suck?" on Ask an Elmer.

The next meeting of the Amateur Radio Experimenters Group will have a topic that is a little different, but equally fascinating. We will enter the world of electromechanical pinball machine restoration thanks to Scott VK2JAX.
– Why a pinball for restoration?
– Tools required
– Different parts within a machine
– The Back Box clean up (Stepper units, Score Reels)
– Coin Door
– Bottom Panel (Relay Bank, Score Motor)
You will learn about challenges faced, and the relaxing journey of restoring an EM pinball machine!
Scott’s journey started in October 2019 when he was looking through Facebook Marketplace and saw a Pinball machine that was a little worse for wear. He couldnt resist purchasing it, and so began the long task of restoration. In this talk, he will go through the activities so far involved in restoring “Jungle”, an Electromechanical (EM) pinball from 1972.

The DX Commander is an All Band Vertical HF Antenna that covers 9 bands from 80m through to 6m. It is an economical and efficient way of getting on every HF band easily with a nice compact vertical antenna.
The antenna is basically a fan dipole, but rather than horizontal, it is vertical quarter wave elements in parallel on a common driven element base with short ground radials. Of particular interest in this design is the fold over on the 40m element, which acts as a 5/8th on 15m.
The antenna is a breeze to put together and in this video I show my build and review from Callum M0MCX – the DX Commander.

On Saturday 2nd of January, the DX opened up between VK/ZL and the USA/Mexico. Lots of QSO’s were made using FT8, but as I had a compromised antenna (a simple Diamond V2000 vertical) I thought my hopes of hearing any of this were slim to none. How wrong I was!
It goes to show that even if you have a simple antenna, you can still work DX thousands of miles away using FT8.
Stations heard:
AA5AM, Texas USA – 14,468km (8,990 miles)
AA5C, Texas USA – 14,459km (8,984 miles)
NZ5F, Texas USA – 14,069km (8742 miles)
K7NN, Arizona USA – 13,265km (8242 miles)
Stations worked:
E51WL, North Cook Islands – 6,483 km (4,028 miles)
E51BQ, South Cook Islands – 5,428 km (3,372 miles)
FK8HA, New Caledonia – 2,896 km (1,799 miles)
FK8HM, New Caledonia – 2,901 km (1,802 miles)

Yes that’s right, a 1 watt contact using a Icom IC-705 on the 144 MHz (2 meter) band across to New Zealand (ZL).
Strong tropospheric propagation was responsible for such an event happening. We also worked New Zealand on other higher bands too! Check out the video here:

I keep hearing "the bands are dead". Well in this live stream, let’s see how much I can hear! I have my radio running on the 40 meter (7 MHz) band running FT8.
As you can see, Gridtracker is running with a realtime map including the RX calls, RX DXCC and realtime receiving data. How many stations will I hear?
I will be running this from Monday 28th Dec 12:00 UTC through to around 22:00 UTC which is 11pm to around 9am local (all night).
See if I hear you! How far away from my station are you when I decoded you? Let me know in the live chat and comments!
Antenna is a simple EFHW antenna.

On a recent Ask an Elmer live stream, the discussion turned toward headphones. What headphones do you use? A good pair can help in pulling out that hard to hear station from the noise.
Adam K6ARK and Rob SevenFortyOne recommended these:
