My Antenna Broke…

So my remote site has suffered a bit of damage after some 140km/h winds smashed into the side of the mountain that it is located on.

The 2m and 70cm antenna are both damaged and will need to be removed and replaced. I’ve spent considerable time and effort into this project, so it was a sad sight to see.

The remote site 99% of the time sits on 144 MHz WSPR as a beacon for other stations to listen for during openings of propagation such as tropospheric ducting or sporadic E.

How does the Amateur Radio community respond in times of crisis?

Amateur Radio has long played an important role in emergency situations and events.

From the ARRL –
Amateur Radio operators set up and operate organized communication networks locally for governmental and emergency officials, as well as non-commercial communication for private citizens affected by the disaster. Amateur Radio operators are most likely to be active after disasters that damage regular lines of communications due to power outages and destruction of telephone, cellular and other infrastructure-dependent systems.

Many radio amateurs are active as communications volunteers with local public safety organizations. In addition, in some disasters, radio frequencies are not coordinated among relief officials and Amateur Radio operators step in to coordinate communication when radio towers and other elements in the communications infrastructure are damaged.

Electromechanical Pinball Machine Restoration

The next meeting of the Amateur Radio Experimenters Group will have a topic that is a little different, but equally fascinating. We will enter the world of electromechanical pinball machine restoration thanks to Scott VK2JAX.

You will learn about challenges faced, and the relaxing journey of restoring an EM pinball machine!

Scott’s journey started in October 2019 when he was looking through Facebook Marketplace and saw a Pinball machine that was a little worse for wear. He couldnt resist purchasing it, and so began the long task of restoration. In this talk, he will go through the activities so far involved in restoring “Jungle”, an Electromechanical (EM) pinball from 1972.

DX Commander All Band Vertical HF Antenna Build & Review

The DX Commander is an All Band Vertical HF Antenna that covers 9 bands from 80m through to 6m. It is an economical and efficient way of getting on every HF band easily with a nice compact vertical antenna.

The antenna is basically a fan dipole, but rather than horizontal, it is vertical quarter wave elements in parallel on a common driven element base with short ground radials. Of particular interest in this design is the fold over on the 40m element, which acts as a 5/8th on 15m.

The antenna is a breeze to put together and in this video I show my build and review from Callum M0MCX – the DX Commander.

I heard DX over 8,900 miles away on 6 meters using FT8

On Saturday 2nd of January, the DX opened up between VK/ZL and the USA/Mexico. Lots of QSO’s were made using FT8, but as I had a compromised antenna (a simple Diamond V2000 vertical) I thought my hopes of hearing any of this were slim to none. How wrong I was!

It goes to show that even if you have a simple antenna, you can still work DX thousands of miles away using FT8.
