Live Amateur TV from 100,000 feet!

Project Horus began in 2010 as the brain child of a group of radio Amateurs in Adelaide, South Australia. Now, 11 years later, one of the ideas that has been discussed many times within the group is finally going to be attempted. A flight is tentatively planned for Sunday March 7th that will carry aloft our first ever digital ATV transmitter!

The next meeting of AREG on Friday February 19th will feature a presentation and Q&A session with Mark VK5QI. He will take us though everything you need to know about how local amateurs will be able to to receive and decode the ATV signal.

How to setup HamAlert to chase your DXCC!

HamAlert is a system that allows you to get notifications when a desired station appears on the DX cluster, the Reverse Beacon Network, SOTAwatch, or PSK Reporter. No need to keep checking these resources manually if you’re looking for a certain callsign, DXCC, CQ zone, IOTA island, SOTA summit or WWFF reference.

In this video I show you how to setup HamAlert to alert you of activity from a particular DXCC you may be chasing.

Amateur Radio to be free in VK – But what’s the catch?

The Australian Communications and Media Authority – @acmadotgov have released their review on the regulatory arrangements that authorise the operation of non-assigned amateur stations.

The objective of our review is to identify the best licensing mechanism that reduces regulatory burden and minimises costs for licensees, while also preserving the current operational utility for licensees.

A new proposal to make amateur radio operators fall under a class license has been proposed. In this video I go over those changes. What is your view? Please let me know in the comments below, and don’t forget to make a submission to the ACMA.

My Antenna Broke…

So my remote site has suffered a bit of damage after some 140km/h winds smashed into the side of the mountain that it is located on.

The 2m and 70cm antenna are both damaged and will need to be removed and replaced. I’ve spent considerable time and effort into this project, so it was a sad sight to see.

The remote site 99% of the time sits on 144 MHz WSPR as a beacon for other stations to listen for during openings of propagation such as tropospheric ducting or sporadic E.
