I’ve wanted to go ever since I moved to Texas. It’s only 3.5 hours away. So I towed the teardrop North, camped at Caddo Lake State Park (video to follow) and attended the Shreveport Bossier Ham Fest. It was a great time. I got to see a lot of cool stuff, meet a lot of great people, pick up some cool things I definitely need, and I even got to get on their special event station and operate as W1AW/5 (sorry for the terrible live stream audio if you caught the stream) That was cool! I’ve been using this 12 Volt Power DC-10A-LFP 10A Variable DC-DC Charger available here: ⭐️ https://www.12voltpower.com/?ref=3 (affiliate of course) for several months. The Charger works great. Variable output from 2.5, 5, and 10 amps with the turn of a knob. It’s RF Quite too. It’s everything a portable/mobile ham running external battery would want. Turns out my cars wiring isn’t quite up to the task. You see, I had this plugged into the 12V socket in my car and let’s just say things may or may not have melted. The wire used in my car is really thin gauge and couldn’t handle the current after all. Thanks Ford. After replacing 4-5 12V sockets (at ~$15 each), I finally thought it might be time to run a proper wire from the cars battery into the cab so I could charge the 100Ah battery I use with this charger. Would you believe it actually worked? Prob not the way you should wire it up, but it’s the way I did it and that’s good enough for me.

After doing some thinking after making the last video, the idea of having to choke out all the RFI coming from the LiTime inverter every time I went camping was not a solution for me. Sure, it mostly worked, but what a pain. That was only half the setup too! We still had solar to deal with! We ended up plugging in my solar setup after filming the last video and it was a nightmare of RFI. I had a Bateria 50 amp MPPT charge controller that was just about the most noisy thing I’ve ever seen. So at the suggestion of a friend, I purchased a Victron inverter and MPPT charge controller. What a difference this made! You’ll have to see it to believe it.

I found this awesome 3D Printed Antenna Mast/Pole Hitch Receiver Mount and just had to print it. I’ve been wanting something like this since I put my trailer hitch on the Exploder. Sure I have a drive over mount, but being able to mount your telescopic mast to your trailer hitch is next level ham radio. I tested every size mast I have and they all worked. Printed on Bambu P1S with Bambu PETG, 10 walls, 40% infill.
*UPDATE There is now a V3 that comes in two sizes, one for smaller masts, one for larger masts. It has also been lengthened by 1/2 an inch and a third hole has been added.

Designed by K6STR and sold by N6ARA, the TinyFilter is a small 10 watt 2 meter band pass filter created out of necessity. Mike, K6STR was doing some 2 meter SOTA activations and was getting his signal squashed by adjacent non ham signals (how dare they!). So Mike & Ara teamed up to bring us the TinyFilter. I was finally able to get the teardrop out to the state park in an RF quiet environment to hunt down all that nasty RFI being caused by that LiTime 2000 watt inverter. Caitlin and I spent about an hour or so trying one variable at a time to see what made a difference and what did absolutely nothing. In the end, we were finally able to get the RFI down so much we went from an S9+ noise being caused by the inverter to and S0! It’s still not perfect, I have some more work to do, but I used everything I currently own to mitigate as much of the RFI as possible and boy howdy did it make a difference! If you have any ideas to help squash these final spurs every 35kHz please share them with the group.

Jonathan, KM4CFT has a new Mini Mic Kit available. This microphone works with a number of QRP radios. It’s similar to the K6ARK Mic that a lot of us have built, but this takes it to another level. It includes all the parts you need, mic, PTT button, 3.5mm input jack, 3D printed housing, etc, but this is built on a PCB that also features a 2 way switch, switching the tip and ring connections making it compatible with a variety of different radios. What that means is you can have one mic to use with both your KX2 and QMX for example. Those radios are wired differently between the Tip and Ring of the 3.5mm plug. Switch position 1 will control the KX2, switch position 2 will control the QMX etc. That’s pretty cool!
