After demonstrating using a straight key and oscillator to learn Morse code, a viewer asked what the equivalent would be if you wanted to learn cw with a paddle instead.

I good friend of the YouTube channel, Jay W4ZXT left a comment for probably the Nth time encouraging me to acquire a CW bug. I finally decided it’s time to start leaning how to use one, so I barrowed one from another friend of mine, Jim KF7E. The ham radio community is amazing!
What is a CW Bug? We’ll more to come in another #short, soon.

If the electric grid goes down for a significant amount of time, you will want to be able to communicate and also run a few of your other electronics . . . maybe even run your fridge. To do this you need a few things.

I found this classic Vertronics Classroom Code Oscillator at a hamfest I attended, recently. These are used to send and receive Morse code with a straight key, in a setting where you can learn the code before getting on the air.

Heather AH7RF is a ham radio operator residing in Hawaii who has been participating in CWTs, which are short-duration Morse code contests. She uses an Elecraft KX2 and a CW Morse paddle, and operates about 75% portable in the beautiful islands of Hawaii. The majority of her early CWT contacts were with other KH6 CWOps members, but she has also made DX contacts in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and California. Heather takes her ham radio to many of the beautiful beaches and mountains in her island adventures. She loves to operate with low power (QRP) when portable in the field.
Join us for this episode to find out more about Heather’s island adventures with QRP portable radio in this episode of the All Portable Discussion Zone “AP/DZ”.
