I have a friend, I’ll call him Tuje (pronounced Tooge). He has decades of experience in commercial VHF/UHF radio communications. On this Summits on the Air winter bonus point excursion, my first activation was on Baby Black. This summit is a cinder cone located in Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Usually it is a hard hike to the top with the loose cinder. But it was about 20 degrees and after a rain storm, so the cinders were frozen, making the hike much easier.

The 14 MHz link in my Summits on the Air dipole broke in the middle of an activation. I limped through the activation and then once I returned to the shack I repaired it.

The Xiegu G106 has some drawbacks, but I have consistently been able to make my Summits on the Air contacts on all of my activations. This radio is worth the $279 if you can’t immediately afford a high quality HF radio.
