In this video, I take apart a popular open-source Z-Match antenna tuner and explain exactly how it works — and why it’s different from Pi-network and T-network tuners.

We crack it open, look at the transformer-coupled coils, the dual variable capacitors, the impedance switch, and even the mysterious resistor load inside. Then we put it on the air and tune a 9 foot 4" antenna on 80m and 17m using both noise-tuning and carrier-based tuning methods.

You’ll also see how the “tune mode” works, why those 68-ohm resistors aren’t a 50-ohm dummy load, and how to use the Z-Match safely at QRP power levels.
