Western US Summit to Summit Events

Western US Summit to Summit Events

Every summer hams across the Western United States simultaneously activate mountain top portable. This Summits on the Air event is actually three in one. Colorado, California and the Pacific Northwest all host a Summit to Summit (S2S) event in which they try to get as many S2S contacts as possible. These events often coincide with a campout or other gathering.
This video is footage of my participation in the California S2S event. I drove to Big Bear, California and camped with about 20-30 other hams who all got up on a summit for the event. The in-camp socializing was also very fun. Follow along as I show you a little bit about what an S2S event looks like.

Portable Morse Code Paddles Series Introduction

Portable Morse Code Paddles Series Introduction

This is the introduction to a multi-part series about portable Morse code paddles. In this series I will feature various paddles used for Summits on the Air or other portable radio activities. Each person has their own CW paddle preferences. I acknowledge that some of the features that are important to me, may not be as important to others. Still, I think as I discuss each of the paddles I feature, I think it will give you an idea of whether or not the paddle is one you would choose for your portable paddle.

My 10 RADIO Essentials for Summits on the Air

My 10 RADIO Essentials for Summits on the Air

I recently uploaded a video to YouTube showing the “10 Essentials” for hiking that I carry in my Summits on the Air pack. Several comments were posted about the video, including one from Reid Lanham.

Reid posted “Great Video. Should be called “10 non-radio” items to carry for SOTA. Now we need a video on the 10 radio items to carry. 73”

Reid’s comments got me thinking. First of all, I didn’t think about the fact that there are people out there who don’t know about THE “10 Essentials” so when they read the video title “My 10 Essentials for SOTA” they might think the video is about RADIO related rather than HIKING related content.

Second, I thought it was a great idea to possibly coble together a list of 10 RADIO items that are important carry on a SOTA activation. I gave it some thought and even asked my followers on Twitter. So here is what I came up with for "My 10 Radio Essentials for Summits on the Air".

Protect Your Radio Gear From Damage

Protect Your Radio Gear From Damage

I keep my radios, accessories, and even my battery protected from damage that may occur in the back of my truck. I used to cover everything in blankets and place all that in milk crates but don’t anymore. There is a better option that is still affordable.
