Ham radio is a diverse hobby with endless possibilities to suite just about everybody’s interests. The vast majority of Summits on the Air excursions require at least some hiking. Frequently that hiking is in areas away from populated areas where you can get assistance should something go wrong. The outdoor “10 Essentials” may give you a fighting chance, IF you carry them.
For this Summits on the Air activation in Western Wyoming I show you what I carry in my pack for the “10 Essentials”. My wife, Sandy W7NRS, joins me on this 2-mile hike to a beautiful area where we have fun making contacts with our ham radio.

I’m back in my old stomping grounds, my hometown in Wyoming. Just a little non-ham radio fun here where we hiked up to the "intermittent spring"

Wow – It took some doing to find a place where I could operate amongst the ant swarm! This SOTA activation wasn’t for the faint of heart, and I almost abandoned this one after the requisite 4 contacts. But perseverance paid off. I found an "OK" location to activate from and worked a bunch of eastern stats and even Sweden (there were two Sweden stations calling – only got one).
