Deploying a portable radio in the field has it’s challenges, but why not make it easier to set up and tear down your station. I have standardized my antenna connections and you might want to also!

“Ham Radio Dude” happened to be in town recently. He’s a friend and fellow YouTuber so I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to bring him along on a Summits on the Air activation. He decided to try out his QRP radio, the Xiegu 5105, for his first ever SOTA activation. Along with his radio, he used the K7ARK EFHW antenna.
After the QRP work, we switch to FM where we worked a few stations on 2 meters and 23 centimeters (a microwave band).
We finished up the activation with my QRO setup that I occasionally use on SOTA peaks. This sure was fun for me as I had a real pileup going in Morse Code.
The Ham Radio Dude was so fun to hang out with and I hope there are more opportunities to do so. Big thanks to Sean!

Sandy W7NRS and I decided to go on a get-away to the San Jacinto’s for a 3-day backpacking trip. We also wanted to hit a Summits on the Air peak while we were there. We got our permits for the Tahquitz zone and made plans to hike up Devils Slide from Idyllwild California. See what gear we took along and how the activation went.

So what is a Summits on the Air Pop-up Event? It’s an event where a group of chasers and activators all meet together on the airwaves within a short time frame. It might be compared to a "CW sprint". Some examples of a SOTA pop-up include the "North America to Europe Summit to Summit Event", the "Willamette Valley Summit to Summit Party", and the "Colorado 14er Event". These events occur once a year over a few hours on a specific day. Mini Morning Madness in Arizona is similar, however it happens about once a week from June 1st – September 1, instead of annually. And, rather than being a few hours in duration, the time frame is even shorter; about 15 -45 minutes for each pop-up event.
