I thought I knew the Xiegu G7250 pretty well, then I discovered something embarrassingly simple: some of the front-panel buttons have additional functions when you long press them. I had been treating them like ordinary one-function buttons and completely missing the deeper menus, shortcuts, and controls hiding underneath.

Facebook Is FULL Of Scams. Beware. This Was The Winning Lottery Ticket! Had I not had a dentist appointment this morning (my dentist is a ham too, btw), I would not have been in College Station, and I probably would not have driven out there to check these radios out for a friend. He’s been scouring Facebook Marketplace for a radio. It is absolutely filled with nothing but scammers. 7300’s for $500? Yeah, right. What’s the catch? He’d send me screen shot after screen shot of deals that were too good to be true. And they were. But then he finds this. A lot of ham radios with an asking price of $500 for everything. I’m like, I’ll check em out but you need to get ahold of this guy and ask some questions, get his number, address, etc. So he does. Sends me the phone number, I call the guy and it’s an actual person with these radios. I ask a few questions, notably the most important one, do they work. "Well, last time I used them a few months ago they did". How many times have you heard that? So we agree for me to stop by after my 8am dentist appointment. He’s there, he’s got the radios and he wants to get rid of them. That’s exactly what he did. I’ll let the video explain the rest of the story…

In this video I dig into the new Xiegu G7250 and start reverse-engineering what’s happening under the hood. Using the radio’s USB serial connection, I capture the 115200 baud boot sequence, inspect STM32 debug output, identify GT911 touchscreen configuration data, watch the radio switch into post-boot binary traffic, and trace what happens when the VFO is turned. The goal is simple: figure out whether there’s a hidden shell, service interface, or other undocumented way into the G7250.

I also explore the G7250’s Ethernet interface and network configuration, including the radio’s 192.168.3.199 address, configured port 50001, ping response, Nmap scans, and the mysterious `SLIP Client` message that appears during startup. Along the way I test serial BREAK, keyboard escape attempts, Linux SLIP networking, raw hex captures, and the radio’s exposed configuration files to see how much of the underlying STM32/Linux-style architecture can be uncovered without opening the case.

This is not a teardown or finished exploit. It’s the first round of hands-on Xiegu G7250 hacking and firmware investigation, with plenty of clues but no shell prompt yet. If you’re into ham radio hacking, SDR reverse engineering, embedded Linux, STM32 development, serial debugging, Ethernet protocol analysis, CI-V style traffic, or figuring out how modern software-defined radios actually work, this one goes straight down the rabbit hole.

In this video, I tackle the trunk installation for the new mobile ham radio after finding out the old bracket mounting holes didn’t line up. Watch as we secure the new mounting bracket using self-tapping screws and get the radio firmly in place. Once powered up, we run a quick on-air simplex test on .52 with Bill (K0WHW) from the Think Lab campus.
