Prepping For Huntsville Hamfest. Am I Packing Too Much?
I can’t believe Huntsville Hamfest is already here! Well, almost. I usually camp at Monte Sano State Park from Monday to Monday and this year is no different. Except instead of car camping like I’ve done the last 2 years, this year I’ll have the teardrop camper. Huntsville is really the main reason I bought the camper. I usually leave super early in the morning on Monday and get to Huntsville around ~4pm but this year, since I’m pulling the trailer, I thought it would be good to leave sometime Sunday afternoon. Get a 4 or 5 hours behind me since I won’t be able to drive 90MPH like I normally do. 70 is kinda top end when I’m towing. I’ll just stay the night in a rest stop when I feel like stopping, then hopefully only have 6 or 7 hours to go and get to Monte Sano right at checkin time. That’s the plan anyway. Since I’m camping in the primitive camp sites (12A) I’ll be totally off grid. This is going to be a great test to see if I can keep the batteries in the camper charged via solar so we can use the AC at night or during the day when we need to cool off. There’s not a lot of sun that comes through the canopy so I’ve brought just about every solar panel and wire that I own to hopefully accomplish this task. We gotta keep Caitlin comfortable after all.
Anyway, I may do a video from the road. I’ll def be doing videos at the camp site and park in general, and of course from the fest. Those prob won’t post until after though as there is almost zero internet on top of the mountain. Enough to watch some YouTube videos usually, but uploading videos is about as painful as downloading a single picture back in the early 90s. I know some of the guys will have their StarLinks setup and I’m pretty sure Kyle AA0Z will be live streaming the cookout on Friday on his channel (it’s AA0Z) if you want to catch the shenanigans. There’s going to be over 200 people at the cookout this year. It’s gonna be a crazy good time!
Hope to see some of you there and the rest of you can live vicariously through all the YouTube content that will be coming out in the next couple weeks.

Yaesu FTM-310D Sapphire Install: The One Big Problem
Installing the Yaesu FTM-310D in Sapphire turned out to be a much bigger project than I expected! Join me and Bill as we work through mounting the new radio, customizing power poles, and tackling the challenge of routing control cables through the center console and under the carpet.
Everything seemed to be going smoothly—from the custom bullet point mount to the final radio test—until we ran into a major issue with the 20ft control cable. If you’ve ever dealt with mysterious power blinks or cable length issues during a mobile install, you’ll want to see how this one unfolded.

50 Years Licensed and Still Building — Gary W0MNA & Martha W0ERI
Gary W0MNA and Martha W0ERI have been licensed for over 50 years each and are still building, activating, and teaching others to do the same. Based in Leavenworth, Kansas, they are regulars at Four Days in May and Ozark Con, where they mentor the Friday evening build session and beta test new kit designs for the Four State QRP Group.
In this episode we talk about how they each got into ham radio, their decades of kit building and homebrew projects, their SOTA activations as a team, and the very active club they run in Leavenworth where monthly build sessions, outdoor operating events, and ARES work keep a growing membership engaged year round.
Join us as we explore how you can get involved in portable radio, QRP, and more in this episode of the All Portable Discussion Zone (AP/DZ). Every aspect of portable operations is covered in this biweekly podcast, from news and gear to achievements, the workbench, contests, awards, and beyond.
