N1MM Voice Keying: Let Your PC Do the Talking

In this video I’ll show you exactly how I set up voice keying in N1MM so the computer handles the repetitive contest exchanges for me.

We’ll cover:

• Recording your own WAV files
• Where to store them inside the N1MM folder structure
• Setting up the function key macros (F1, F2, F3, etc.)
• Using concatenated WAV files to eliminate audio clicks between messages
• Sharing operator-specific callsigns and messages

I’ve also included a download link (below) containing my macro layout, recording checklist and example files to help you build your own voice keyer.

The Truth About Chokes & Ugly Baluns

This is an introductory, practical guide to common-mode chokes (often called "ugly baluns") aimed at everyday amateur radio operators.

The explanations are deliberately simplified to help illustrate what happens when RF current flows on the outside of the coax shield, why this can happen, and how a common-mode choke helps reduce it.

For those interested in the detailed engineering, Steve Hunt G3TXQ (SK) carried out extensive measurements on common-mode chokes and his work remains one of the best practical references available. His data was invaluable when I built my own chokes – link here:

As with most things in RF engineering, antenna balance, feedline routing, nearby objects and operating frequency all influence the amount of common-mode current present. The values mentioned in this video are simply those I’ve found to work well on my own station.

How I Eliminated (almost) All The Inverter RFI In My Camper

I was finally able to get the teardrop out to the state park in an RF quiet environment to hunt down all that nasty RFI being caused by that LiTime 2000 watt inverter. Caitlin and I spent about an hour or so trying one variable at a time to see what made a difference and what did absolutely nothing. In the end, we were finally able to get the RFI down so much we went from an S9+ noise being caused by the inverter to and S0! It’s still not perfect, I have some more work to do, but I used everything I currently own to mitigate as much of the RFI as possible and boy howdy did it make a difference! If you have any ideas to help squash these final spurs every 35kHz please share them with the group.
