I found this park by pure dumb luck. You see, when I set out from Huntsville, TX to Huntsville, AL, I wanted to take a different route than I normally would. Google Maps suggested a route that would take me South East to I-10 through Southern Louisiana. It only added 45 minutes to the entire trip so I figured why not? It’s a beautiful drive. Once past New Orleans, I’d hop on 59 North and make my way through Mississippi to AL. That was the plan anyway. Google had other plans. On Sunday afternoon I set out. I wanted to get some miles behind me. When I’m not towing a trailer it takes about 11.5 hours to get to Huntsville, AL. I knew it would take longer now that I’m pulling the teardrop so I figured I’d make it a two day trip. I selected the correct route, but after some bit of driving, Google must have recalculated a different route. I figured this out when I was pretty much due east of where I live, going along the south side of Lake Livingston. Not where I expected to be. But, being the adventurous one, I figured screw it, let’s see where this takes me. The original plan was to take I-10 and once I got to 59 I would find a rest stop to camp overnight. Instead, Google had me going through the middle of nowhere LA. A pretty drive, but nary a freeway or rest stop to be found. It was all back roads. At around 10PM I passed a Walmart in what I now now is right on the LA/MS border. I thought, do I just sleep in the Walmart parking lot? Nah, it’s too early. I can keep going. A couple miles later I was crossing the Mighty Mississippi River. That very road dumped me in the middle of Natchez, MS. I’d taken Natchez Trace Parkway before, though much further north, and thought to myself, hey I can camp somewhere on the parkway at one of the many pull offs they have. Some of them even have bathrooms. About 10 miles into Natches Trace Parkway (I started at the very beginning, which was cool) I saw a sign for Natches State Park Campground. I was on the phone with Caitlin at the time and she was helping me figure out where exactly it was. So I end up staying there on my way to AL, but I also learned Caitlin had never been on Natchez Trace Parkway. If you’ve never been, look it up. It’s literally hundreds of miles of beautiful road and scenery and it’s all national park. The whole damn thing is a POTA! Last year or the year before I pulled off I-20 on my way to AL and activated it. I’d taken the parkway a couple other times and it is just drop dead gorgeous. Much better than taking the freeway if you’re heading North/South. Anyway, I knew I had to take Caitlin there. She’d love it. We left Monte Sano State Park on Sunday morning. About 7 hours later we were at Natchez State Park. I stayed in campground A going to AL but wanted to check out campground B this time. Boy were we glad we did. We had the entire campground to ourselves. It was awesome. We picked what we think was the best campsite there. A beautiful site overlooking the lake. We only had a few hours of daylight left so we thought we’d explore the park a bit and it is absolutely beautiful. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend it.
