The HARSHEST Radio Broadcasting Site in Australia | Kunanyi / Mount Wellington

Kunanyi / Mount Wellington ("the mountain") is known for it’s wild weather including high winds and extreme snow and ice even during summer months! So why would anyone want to build a radio broadcasting tower on top?

Today I took a trip to give you a tour of the site, including a surprise cameo by some workers who were perched high above the ground doing preventative maintenance.

It’s Hobart’s tallest structure at 130m and is perched 1250m (4101 feet) above sea level. The mountain is also home to a 70cm amateur repeater – VK7RTC.

Telescopic QRP HF Antennas Tested – Are They Trash?

Many hams starting out in HF see the appeal of these highly portable antennas and think its the gateway to the air waves. They aren’t cheap however. Building a simple wire antenna is pennies on the dollar cheaper and more effective. They are convenient though. Or are they? There are things that are left unsaid on the instructions, today we will talk about those things.

In this video I make my first attempt at direction finding the awful RFI that is plaguing my ham radio station. I’m using an MFJ-852 AC Line Noise Meter along with an Icom IC-705 and Tape Measure Yagi-Uda antenna.

Some records only go up to 2018, so data to 2022 has been filled in with growth trend data.
