Every ham eventually discovers that good troubleshooting starts with good measurement. In this video we look at five test instruments that every amateur radio operator should have on the bench. These tools make it much easier to diagnose antenna problems, verify transmitter performance, and understand what your station is actually doing.
We cover the core instruments that solve the majority of station problems:
• Antenna analyzers (including NanoVNA-class instruments) for measuring SWR, impedance, and resonance
• Dummy loads for safely testing transmitters without radiating a signal
• Power / SWR meters to verify forward power and detect mismatch problems
• Spectrum analyzers to see harmonics, spurious signals, and RF noise
• Multimeters for checking voltage, continuity, and basic electrical faults
Most issues in a ham station fall into three categories: antenna problems, feedline issues, or basic electrical faults. With these five tools you can quickly determine what’s actually happening instead of relying on guesswork.
Whether you’re new to amateur radio or building a more capable workbench, these instruments form the foundation of a well-equipped ham shack test bench.

In this educational part 2 of an antenna series video (likely from a ham radio YouTube channel like Tank Radio or similar), host Frank discusses radiation patterns of four basic antenna types—dipole, vertical, Yagi, and end-fed halfwave (EFHW/inverted fed halfwave)—using free MMANA-GAL antenna modeling software (moment method tool based on MININEC, great for beginners with plenty of tutorials).
Guest Paul @prephampaul joins to demonstrate live models in free-space or near-ground setups at 20m/14.05 MHz, showing the classic broadside "donut" pattern for a horizontal dipole (perpendicular to the wire, directional when oriented properly), omnidirectional 360° donut for a vertical (ideal for all-around coverage like Field Day), highly forward-focused lobe with strong nulls behind for a multi-element Yagi (great for DX, satellites, moonbounce, or fox hunting with elements like reflector, driven, and directors), and a sloped EFHW’s "gumdrop" high-angle pattern biased toward the downward slope (popular for POTA due to easy setup, tree support, minimal space, and good local/regional performance with a short counterpoise).
