This simple statement is very true. and sparked well over 50 comments on direction finding, coded messages, mobility, frequency hopping ect…
First off what type of SHTF are we looking at?
Natural disaster? Most radio comms will be permitted and encouraged as necessary.
EMP: Lots of radio equipment could be useless. some will survive. In big cities, roving gangs may take advantage of Radio Intel to Loot. In smaller or more rural areas less so and remaining radios may be more of a community asset. Depends of how things play out and duration.
Foreign Invasion: Occupied areas will see massive restrictions of radio to official news and propaganda only. Resistance radio will have to adapt. Small portable, clandestine stations in occupied areas. This is your typical war zone AO.
Societal /Economic Collapse: This is the one we all worry about. What happens when our own government or military turns on us. Where & how would radio be most and least affected? How would affected people operate in that environment. Who’s the enemy?Who’s the friend? What info is important enough to transmit when your fighting against nearly everyone else in the AO? Govt actors, Criminal gangs, hungry and desperate individuals.
