What happens when a call comes over your radio while you’re away from the shack? In this video, I set up the Boondock Tango with a basic Baofeng UV-5R-style radio to record, upload, and transcribe received audio from ham radio repeaters. This setup uses the radio’s speaker output, a simple 2.5mm-to-3.5mm adapter, local SD card storage, Wi-Fi configuration, and the Boondock Tango web interface to create a small unattended radio monitoring station.

After getting the Tango connected to my network, I test it with a local AllStarLink node and confirm that it successfully records received audio, including voice tests and repeater responses. Then I leave it running overnight on Australian VK repeaters through AllStar to see what happens while I’m asleep. The result is a searchable collection of recordings and AI-generated transcriptions, including repeater IDs, callsigns, and real conversations from the other side of the planet.
This is the first setup video in my Boondock Tango series. Future videos will cover audio level settings, firmware upgrades, and how to recover the device if a firmware update goes sideways. Whether you want to monitor local repeaters, AllStarLink traffic, public service audio, or other receiver audio sources, the Boondock Tango shows how useful unattended radio recording and transcription can be.
