What is Automatic Packet Reporting System APRS and how to use it on your ham radio

APRS was the first mode of operation that kicked my interest of ham radio into a passion which led ultimately to this channel. Its an impressive mode to use in the field and at home for enhanced communication.

Steps to make this work:
1. Generally you need a newer radio, like an IC-7300 and a multiband antenna matched to your radio (no tuners).
2.Download ION2G: https://www.ion2g.app/
3. Request a BETA license or purchase a license to support the development effort
NOTE: Buying a license send an automatic license to email
4. Run the application, load the license and code plug (frequency list)
5. Setup your callsign, audio in/out and setup the radio connection
6. Turn on ALE sounding to send your callSet ALC for output audio
7. Set "ALE Self Address" to your callsign for each ALE network you are on.

This is a clip from my video I recorded in 2016 while on DXpedition to Costa Rica. The TN07 SFP-102 telescoping flagpole antenna is easily portable and makes for a great antenna to setup in the field. In this video I show the antenna parts, the setup and SWR and do some operating from Costa Rica on this great antenna.

Portable Morse Code Paddle by Boyd Mason NE8KE

The Te-Ne-Ke Morse code paddle (or key) is another durable option for your portable radio adventures. These paddles are made by the North Ottawa Amateur Radio Club in western Michigan. The paddle is a unique design, with a smooth touch and small footprint. The design was patented by Boyd Masen, NE8KE who has since turned the rights to make and sell the key to the NOARK.
